STARTING

  • Airplane Preflight Inspection -COMPLETE.
  • Cabin Door-SECURED.
  • Seat Belts and Shoulder Harnesses -FASTENED and adjusted or stowed.
  • Fuel Shut-Off Valve -ON.
  • Brakes -SET.
  • Propeller Control -FULL INCREASE
  • Alternate Air -Cold.
  • Electrical and Radio Switches -OFF.
  • Master Switch -ON.
  • Engine Prime as Required
  1. Mixture -FULL RICH.
  2. Throttle -¼ to 1/, inch OPEN.
  3. Electric Fuel Pump -ON until fuel pressure is indicated then OFF.
  • Mixture -IDLE CUT-OFF.
  • Throttle -½ to 1 inch OPEN.
  • Magneto Switches -BOTH ON.
  • Insure Propeller and Propeller Blast Area is Clear.
  • Starter -ENGAGE, release after engine fires.
  • Mixture -FULL RICH, after engine fires.
  • Throttle -1000 1200 RPM.
  • Oil Pressure -CHECK, must indicate pressure within 30 seconds maximum.
  • Electrical and Radio Switches -AS DESIRED.
  • Brakes -release when ready to taxi.

BEFORE TAKEOFF

  • Brakes -SET.
  • Flight Controls -CHECK freedom of movement, proper operation.
  • Elevator Trim -SET takeoff position.
  • Flight lnstruments/Radio(s) -CHECK and SET.
  • Check Master Switch -ON.
  • Fuel Shut-Off Valve -ON.
  • Mixture -FULL RICH (lean as required for high altitude).
  • Engine Instruments -CHECK normal indications.
  • Engine Run-Up 1800 RPM (Elevator Control Full Back)
  1. Magnetos -CHECK (175 RPM max drop, 50 RPM maximum differential) return both switches to ON.
  2. Propeller Cycle CHECK operation full decrease until RPM drop of 300 to 500 return to high HPM position.
  3. Alternate Air -CHECK operation then return to COLD position.
  4. Engine Instruments -within green arc.
  5. Throttle 1000 RPM.
  • Electric Fuel Pump – ON.
  • Cabin Door and Windows – CLOSED and LATCHED.
  • Seat Belts/Shoulder Harnesses – FASTENED and adjusted.
  • Brakes -release when ready for takeoff; check parking brake is full off.

TAKEOFF
NORMAL

  • Throttle -FULL OPEN applying smoothly.
  • Engine Instruments -CHECK normal indications and satisfactory takeoff power.
  • Attitude -RAISE TAIL.
  • Lift-Off-55-60 MPH.
  • Climb -75-80 MPH

TAKEOFF
OBSTACLE

During an obstacle takeoff, use Normal Takeoff procedures with the following exceptions.

  • Apply Full Power rapidly but smoothly.
  • Accelerate in the three-point (tail down) attitude.
  • Maintain following speeds until clear of 50 ft. obstacle’

TAKEOFF
SOFT FIELD

For soft field takeoff, use Normal Takeoff procedures with the following exceptions.

  • Attitude -TAIL LOW but clear of ground.
  • Lift-Off -as soon as possible
  • After Lift-Off -LEVEL FLIGHT to obtain a safe margin of airspeed prior to climb.

CLIMB

  • Throttle -FULL OPEN.
  • Propeller Control -FULL INCREASE.
  • Mixture -lean only as requires to maintain smooth engine operation.
  • Airspeed -75-80 MPH.
  • Electric Fuel Pump -OFF after safe altitude has been obtained.

CRUISE

  • Level-Off  -TRIM.
  • Airspeed – ACCELERATE to desired cruise airspeed.
  • Power – SET to cruise power.
  • Mixture – LEAN when below 75% power.

DECENT

  • Mixture – FULL RICH.
  • Throttle – REDUCE as desired.
  • Airspeed – AS DESIRED.

LANDING
NORMAL

  • Seat and Shoulder Harness -FASTENED.
  • Propeller – FULL INCREASE.
  • Mixture – RICH.
  • Electric Fuel Pump – ON.
  • Brakes – CHECK FIRM (Park Brake -OFF)
  • Approach Airspeed – 70-75 MPH.
  • Throttle – as necessary for desired glide path.
  • After touchdown – Power Off, brake as required.
  • Electric Fuel Pump – OFF.

LANDING
OBSTACLE SHORT FIELD

Use Normal Landing procedures with following additions:

  • Approach Airspeed – 55 MPH Decathlon Standard and CS.
  • Throttle – AS DESIRED to control rate of decent.
  • Slip aircraft as necessary to increase rate of decent.
  • Touchdown in full stall three-point attitude with stick full back.
  • Brake as required. – As speed decreases, braking must be moderated to prevent possible nose-over.

LANDING
SOFT FIELD

Use Normal Landing procedures with following additions:

  • Approach – Use Normal or Obstacle Landing procedure.
  • Flare to three-point landing attitude and add small amount of power.
  • Touchdown in full stall three-point attitude with stick full back.
  • Use power to assist in maintaining tail-low attitude.

SHUTDOWN

  • Brakes – SET.
  • Electrical Equipment – OFF.
  • Mixture – IDLE CUT-OFF.
  • Magnetos/Master Switch -OFF after propeller stops.
  • Controls – SECURE with lap belt around forward control stick only.
  • Wheels – CHOCKED.
  • Wing/Tail Tie Downs – SECURE.
